BENI MGUILD

(+ other every days rugs from the central + western middle Atlas) Rugs with monochrome red, reddish orange, purple or brownish purple pile or with simple diamond grid designs have been used all over the Middle Atlas. They most often served as sleeping mats or covers as long as being used in nomadic households and sometimes even later on in sedentary circumstances. Such rugs are known from the central and western groups of the Beni Mguild, Ait Sgougou, Beni Mtir and some groups of the region around Boujad. White ground rugs with simple diamond designs have been in similar use with the more central and north-eastern groups in the Middle Atlas. The most popular ones come from the Beni Ouarain but they have also been produced among the Beni Alaham, Marmoucha, Ait Seghrouchène, Ait Youssi and Beni Mguild to name the most important ones. The ones from the latter two groups most often have sizes of around 5‘ 6‘‘ - 6‘ x 8‘ - 9‘ while the examples from the other groups may reach sizes of 6‘ x 12‘ - 15‘ in old traditional examples.
