AIT OUAOUZGUITE

The rich and diverse textile culture of the Ait Ouaouzguite has been known as the finest one throughout rural Morocco since the 19th century and a professionalized branch has already been established during the French protectorate's period from the early 1930s on. Motifs and composition elements taken from urban Rabat carpets are known in the villages of the large Ait Ouaouzguite confederation since the 19th century and these urban influences became increasingly more fashionable in the 20th century. The present rug is a typical example for such a production of a time shortly after Morocco became independent in 1956. The quite fine structure, the car motifs surrounding the octogonal star motifs mixed with the chicken, camels and goats along the outer border as representations of wealth are typical for this period. In the later, more commercialized productions from the 1980s on, the structure and also the drawings have become ever denser + denser and the designs more and more inspired by oriental models.
