About this Rug's history
Origin - BOUJAD
The region around the cities of Boujad and Beni Mellal is a landscape of hills and plains situated between the Middle Atlas and the Atlantic ocean mostly inhabited by Arabic groups and arabised Berbers.
The carpets of the area share similarities with the ones from the Middle Atlas in their structure and pile height, but designs do not seem to strictly follow the traditional rules of the Berber weaving culture. Even if the basic formal canon of diamond grids, checkerboard fields often reminds of design concepts known from the Middle Atlas, the overall character is often more playful. One can find motifs like stars, flowers or medallion shapes borrowed from urban carpets or free floating forms that cannot be decoded but are a unique pictorial vision of an individual weaver. The sometimes sharp colours are said to be preferred by the rural Arabic taste. The region seems to be a melting pot of small migrations that took place in the second half of the twentieth century. So the specific regional pile weaves do not have a far-reaching history in the traditional sense, but rather represent a relatively young cultural development. Nevertheless they carry a very distinctive character and the best examples may be regarded as charming works of art.

Vintage original unique Berber Moroccan rugs. Hand made by our Berber artisans. Not imitations. These Vintage Rugs have been made the same way for hundreds of years, the nomadic Berber people of Northwest Africa have kept a proud tradition of creating hand made artisans rugs. Own one-of-a-kind rugs with generations of traditions and wonder. Azilal high atlas Azilal rugs often tell stories through their use of bold colours and patterns. Originating from the high atlas mountains, these sought-after creations are single-knotted, and woven in wool with intricate patterns and symbolism. The base of an azilal rug is mostly a light shade of cream or white - the natural colour of the wool used - then woven with brightly tinted wool colored by the regional flora.

Boujad central plains boujad rugs most often appear in warm red, pink and orange hues. They are created with the typical knotting techniques practiced by berber tribes - but with the knot being pulled tighter, the rugs require less wool. This enables the weaver to create the intricate geometric patterns that boujad rugs are famous for. The colours are created by natural dyes - from flowers, berries, leaves and henna. The boujad area is a wider area of Morocco rather than one small tribal location.
