C+E HIGH ATLAS

(Central and eastern High Atlas)
In the meantime there is clear evidence that these rugs mostly come from more eastern parts of the country: There is reliable information that such rugs have been found in the villages on the northern side of the Jebel Ayache and it is quite likely that similar ones have been made in larger parts of the eastern High Atlas. The weaving structure reminds of the one known from the Azilal province neighbouring on the western side but is normally somewhat coarser and the wool is most often a bit less glossy than in the high valleys of the Azilal province. Also the designs remind on one side of the rugs known from the Azilal region but with a certain influence from the nearby Middle Atlas tribes of the Beni Mguild and Ait Youssi. Also urban influence can be recognized and it seems likely that the production of such rugs has been taught in schools or education centers. In case of further eastern origins the designs are obviously influenced by the large red ground rugs from the Ait Bou Ichaouen (known in the market as ‚Talsint‘) and the Algerian carpets from the Jebel Amour region. Large hooked diamond forms or sawtooth lines, sometimes with hooks in opposing directions or hooked medallion shapes can be understood as typical design features from these most eastern regions. It has also been proposed that rugs of a similar type had been made in more recent years by weavers of the Ait Khebbach in the southern part of the Tafilalet oasis.
